Happy Birthday

She was stunned. He’d bought her a present? What could he have gotten her? She immediately tore off the paper and became slightly confused as she looked at the small black box beneath. It was obviously from a jewelry store.

She opened the lid. Inside, atop a piece of cardboard covered in black velvet, was a lovely and delicate gold cross on a thin gold chain. It had a tiny diamond chip on the end of each arm and a slightly larger diamond baguette in the center of the cross. It was tasteful, charming and definitely not cheap.

She quickly closed the box and held it clasped tightly in her hand as she went out to find him. He was not in the cafe. Sure enough, she saw him through the window, walking to his car in the parking lot. She rushed to confront him before he could get in.

“Ben!” she yelled as she opened the door. He stopped at his car, slumping his head and shoulders. His hope had obviously been to escape unnoticed. He turned to face her as she stormed up to him, gift in hand. “Why did you buy me this?”

Ben gave a snort of disgust at her reaction. “You’re welcome.” He turned back around and unlocked his car door.

Felicity put a hand on his shoulder to make him face her again. “Thank you,” she said sincerely. “It’s beautiful. It’s too much. You’re barely even speaking to me, why would you buy me this?”

He squinted at her in annoyance. “Well, it’s not like I bought it today.” He gave a heavy sigh and dropped his eyes to the ground. “I got it back when I found out your birthday was coming. You know...right after the night we spent at Allie’s.” He still wouldn’t meet her gaze. “I saw it, and it made me think of you. It was pretty and I thought you’d like it.” He shifted his feet uncomfortably and then became annoyed again. “I couldn’t find the receipt, so I figured I might as well give it to you. Happy birthday.” The last was practically spit out, but it made Felicity smile. She was sure he was only pretending to be mad at her.

Ben began to open the car door, but she put a hand out to gently push it closed again. He looked up at her with a scowl on his face. “Thank you,” she said again softly. “I love it.”

He gave up his pretense of being angry with a little huff of breath and a smile. “Too bad you’ll never wear it.”

“Sure I will.” She immediately opened it, took the chain from the box and fastened it around her neck. “See?”

Ben shook his head with a doubting little laugh. “Yeah, in the daytime.”

“Every time I leave the house, from now on, believe me.” Something in her voice drew his attention. He looked up at her questioningly. “Luke attacked me last night,” she explained.

Ben was immediately alarmed, although she was obviously alright. “Oh man, are you okay?”

“I staked him,” she said quietly with large eyes.
